A lesson on snakes

Today on the news there was an article which made me go WHY twice. The article was about two boys in Canada who got strangled by an African Rock Python which had escaped from a pet shop.

Ok, the first WHY is WHY has a pet shop got an AFRICAN ROCK PYTHON!? It can grow to 6 meters, can weigh over 100 pounds and can eat buffalo! So why would a pet shop keep a python?

The second WHY is why the python would kill people? In the wild, they eat gazelles, buffalo, and other African herbivores. Humans would be too small and the pet shop always fed the python (hopefully).

So that’s just a little WHY post for this news article. I’ll probably do another WHY news article and they can join Monarch 101 and Ben’s Top 5 as regular articles.python

When threatened, animals have two main responses – run away or attack (playing dead is a reaction limited to very few species). I do not know the full details, but my guess is that it is not a food thing and that the two boys came across the python and decided that it would be fun to prod it a bit.
