Monarch 101: Henry II

Hello! It’s that time again- Monarch 101! Today it’s Henry II’s story and how he is one of the most interesting kings ever.

So, Henry II came to the throne in 1154 and from day 1 was being awesome. The Pope gave his blessing to invade Ireland. ONE YEAR AFTER HENRY BECAME KING!

But, during these battles, Henry’s best buddy Thomas Beckett became Archbishop of Canterbury. Know this story? Well, Henry wanted power over the bishops in the Church so Henry made good ol’ Thomas to control the church. Did it work?

Beckett started being all religious and Henry got angry that Beckett wasn’t giving him Church power. Then he returned, and ran away, and returned, and ran away… OK, maybe not THAT many times but when he returned for the last time, Henry yelled:

Yea, thanks for that Henry. Anyhow, four knights rode to Canterbury Cathedral, where Beckett was and KILLED HIM! HACKED HIS BRAINS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, after that little incident, what happened next? Henry’s sons and wife rebelled against him and started the Great Rebellion along with William, King of Scotland. Buttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt, they all got completely kicked in the ankles.

After the rebellion, Henry was forced to accept his son, Richard the Lionheart as King.

Find out what happened later…
