In Ben’s Guessing Game Week 1, I posted three images; a monky, a monk and a pig. I asked you to guess how they were linked. unfortunately, only Raina (my cousin, if you haven’t guessed), got it right. Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap – OK it’s getting boring now. The answer was Journey to the West, an ancient China legend. In the West, you hear about King Arthur, in China you hear about Journey to the West.

The story is about a monk, Tang San Zang, who was sent to India to get some scriptures. Along the way he met the Monkey King, a supernatural monkey who was born from a rock, and the Tang monk freed him from giant mountains which he was trapped under for 500 years by the gods. Along the way they met a pig man, Zhu Ba Jie, and a fish man, Sha Wu Jing, who joined them. Their first adventure was where they fought a monster. Their second adventure was where they fought a monster. Their third… well, you know the gist.

Despite what you may think about the story, to Chinese people it is an epic, just like King Arthur. To me it is quite an interesting story, especially some of the demons they fought.

Finally, just a quick debate. The Monkey King has got supernatural shape-changing abilities. So, do you think he should be a real superhero or not?

Please leave your comment and let me know.

  1. I like your comparison. I think the Monkey could be seen as a Superhero, as he seemed to have magical power, and he always rushed to his master’s rescue. Sadly, his act of kindness was not always appreciated by his master, and worst still, he got punished for telling the truth. I do feel sorry for this poor Monkey sometimes.
